India’s Research Potential vs. Global Standards

India has made impressive strides in research, ranking 4th globally in research output with over 1.3 million papers produced between 2017-2022. Yet, when it comes to global impact and quality, the gap remains significant.

Here’s a reality check:
• India has 216 researchers per million inhabitants, compared to China’s 1,200 and the USA’s 4,300.
• India spends less than 1% of its GDP on research, while global leaders like South Korea and the USA allocate 2.5%-4%.
• Despite accounting for 17.7% of the world’s population, India contributes to only 2.7% of global clinical trials—a sharp contrast to the USA’s 47%.

The key questions are:
⿡ Are we leveraging our immense talent pool effectively?
⿢ Are our investments in research and infrastructure adequate to match global standards?

India has the potential to emerge as a global leader in medical research and innovation.

Achieving this requires urgent and precise action to address the existing gaps.
